โก L.A. County Jury Duty โ Quick Facts
If you've been summoned for jury duty in Los Angeles (L.A. County Superior Court), you're joining the largest trial court system in the United States. While the service is a civic duty, the financial aspect is a common concern for residents from Lancaster to Long Beach.
โ Quick Summary: Los Angeles jurors are paid $15 per day starting on the second day of service. You also receive $0.34 per mile (one-way) for your commute. Private employers in LA are not legally required to pay your salary during service.
Los Angeles Juror Payment Schedule
The Los Angeles Superior Court follows the California state-wide compensation model. There is no "extra" county-level pay beyond the state minimum.
| Service Day | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | $0.00 | The first day is always unpaid by the court. |
| Day 2 to End | $15.00 | Standard daily fee. |
| Mileage | $0.34/mi | Calculated from your home to the courthouse (one-way). |
Courthouse Parking in Los Angeles
Parking is the most stressful part of LA jury duty. Most L.A. Superior Court locations provide free parking for jurors, but only in designated lots.
- Stanley Mosk Courthouse (Downtown): Jurors typically park at the Walt Disney Concert Hall or neighboring designated structures. Validation is provided in the jury assembly room.
- Clara Shortridge Foltz (Criminal): Use the designated juror lots. Do NOT park in private commercial lots, as the court cannot validate those.
- Van Nuys/Long Beach/Pasadena: These locations have on-site or adjacent structures clearly marked for jurors.
โ ๏ธ Tip: Arrive at least 45 minutes early. LA traffic and parking structure lines can be unpredictable, and being late can result in having to serve an extra day.
LA Employer Obligations
Under California Labor Code Section 230, your employer in Los Angeles must allow you time off to serve. They cannot fire, demote, or retaliate against you. However, they are not required to pay you.
Many large employers in the Los Angeles area (like Disney, Kaiser Permanente, and local government agencies) do provide full jury duty pay as a benefit. Check your employee handbook immediately after receiving your summons.
How to Use the LA Juror Portal
Los Angeles uses an advanced "MyJuryService" portal. You can use it to:
- Register for service and provide contact info.
- Request a postponement (LA usually allows one postponement of up to 90 days).
- Request an excuse (for medical or financial hardship).
- Check your reporting status the night before (after 5:00 PM).

Financial Hardship in LA County
Because $15/day is significantly lower than the LA minimum wage, many jurors face financial strain. If serving would cause "extreme financial hardship," you can submit a request to be excused via the portal. You will likely need to provide proof of income and a brief explanation of why your employer's lack of pay prevents you from fulfilling your basic needs.
