Maricopa County is one of the busiest court systems in the country. If you've been summoned to downtown Phoenix, here is everything you need to know about the financial side of your civic duty.

The Daily Pay Rate

Arizona's state-mandated pay is notoriously low. Jurors in Maricopa County receive just $12 per day. In addition, the county provides a mileage reimbursement (currently around 14.5 to 17 cents per mile) based on the distance from your zip code to the downtown courthouse.

If you are seated on a trial, the pay doesn't go up significantly, but you do get the satisfaction of fulfilling a crucial civic role. The county typically mails a check or provides a pre-loaded debit card at the end of your service.

The Commute and Parking

Downtown Phoenix traffic can be brutal, especially during the morning rush. The court does offer validated parking at specific garages (like the Jefferson Street Garage). We highly recommend double-checking the parking map included with your summons so you don't accidentally park in a non-validated lot.

What If I Can't Afford It?

Because $12 a day won't even cover lunch at a downtown cafe, many hourly workers face a real crisis. If serving would cause an 'extreme financial hardship,' Maricopa County allows you to request an excusal or postponement online via their juror portal. You will need to explain your financial situation clearly.
