If you've been summoned to the Central Justice Center in Santa Ana or any of the other OC courts, you are part of one of the busiest legal systems in California. Here is what the county pays.
Day One Pays Nothing
Under California state law, your first day of jury service is completely unpaid by the court. This first day is considered your basic civic duty. If you are dismissed on day one, you will not receive a check from Orange County.
Day Two and Beyond
If you are selected for a trial or asked to return for a second day of selection, the court begins paying you $15 per day starting on day two. In addition, you will receive a mileage reimbursement (currently 34 cents per mile, one-way) from your home to the courthouse.
California Employer Rules
While $15 a day doesn't go far in Orange County, many California employers are generous. However, the state does not legally require private employers to pay for jury duty leave. State and local government employees, as well as teachers, usually receive full pay. If you work for a private company, check with HR immediately. If you face extreme financial hardship, you can request an excuse online via the OC Superior Court portal.
