Reporting to the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice or the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center in downtown Detroit? Here is exactly what Wayne County will compensate you for your time.
The Mileage and Daily Rate
Wayne County follows Michigan's statewide rules. For your first day (often just a half-day of selection), you earn $15. If you are seated on a jury or return for subsequent days, the pay increases to $30 per day.
In addition to the daily stipend, Wayne County pays a mileage rate (around 20 cents per mile) from your home address. The court usually issues a debit card that gets loaded with your pay at the end of your service.
Downtown Parking Details
Parking in downtown Detroit can be tricky. Wayne County generally provides validated parking in specific lots near the courthouses. Do not lose your parking stub, and make sure you only park in the lots specifically named in your summons paperwork, otherwise, you'll be paying $20+ out of pocket.
Can I Get Excused for Financial Reasons?
If losing a few days of regular wages will mean you can't pay rent, Wayne County does consider financial hardship requests. You must submit your request well before your report date, usually by filling out the back of your summons and mailing it back with proof of income or a letter from your employer stating they do not pay for jury duty.
