β‘ York Jury Duty β Quick Facts
β Quick Summary: Reporting for duty in York? We explain the $9/day state compensation rate, how to handle the downtown York parking situation, and what your employer is legally required to do.
York County Compensation Overview
Being summoned to the York County Judicial Center means you'll be paid the standard Pennsylvania state rate. It's important to set your financial expectations early.
Jurors are paid $9.00 per day for the first three days. For trials lasting four days or longer, the rate bumps up to $25.00 daily. You also get a modest 17 cents per mile reimbursement for your commute to downtown York.
Parking at the Judicial Center
The York County Judicial Center is located right in the downtown core. The county is well aware that parking can be a headache, so they have a system in place.
- Designated Lots: Jurors are typically instructed to park in specific garages or lots (such as the Philadelphia Street Parking Garage).
- Validation: The jury assembly room will validate your parking. Never park at a street meter! You will not be able to leave the courtroom to feed the meter, and you will get a ticket. The court will not pay your parking fines.
Will I Lose Income?
That is entirely dependent on your employer. York County employers are legally forbidden from firing you for attending jury duty. However, PA law does not force them to pay your wages while you are out. Ask your HR department if they have a 'Civic Duty' or 'Jury Duty' paid leave policy. If they don't, you must decide if the $9/day stipend will cause a severe financial hardship and request an excuse if necessary.
