You just pulled a summons from the mailbox demanding you appear at the Allegheny County Courthouse in downtown Pittsburgh. Before you start stressing about parking near Grant Street, let's talk about the money.
The Base Pay in Allegheny County
For the first three days of your jury service in Allegheny County, the pay is $9.00 per day. Yes, you read that correctly. Nine dollars.
However, if your trial drags on and you serve for four days or more, the county bumps your pay to $25.00 per day starting on the fourth day. While this is better, it's still far below a living wage.
What About Travel and Mileage?
The court does provide a small travel allowance. Jurors are paid a standard mileage rate (typically around 17 cents per mile) from their home to the courthouse. Unfortunately, if you decide to park in a private garage downtown, you are footing that bill yourself. We highly recommend taking the 'T' (Pittsburgh Regional Transit) or a bus if possible to avoid steep parking fees.
Your Employer's Responsibility in PA
Pennsylvania law is notoriously tough on workers when it comes to jury duty. There is no state law requiring private employers to pay your regular salary while you serve on a state or county jury. However, many larger corporations in Pittsburgh voluntarily offer paid civic leave. As soon as you get your summons, take it to HR to find out if you'll be paid.
Pro Tip: If you are an hourly worker who will lose a week's pay, and you cannot afford rent or groceries because of this $9-a-day rate, you can submit a financial hardship request to the Allegheny County Jury Coordinator.
