The California Mileage Rate
California does mandate a travel reimbursement for jurors, but it comes with a major catch. As of 2026, the rate is set at 34 cents per mile.
However, state law specifies that this reimbursement is only paid one-way. You are only paid for the miles from your home to the courthouse. Your drive home is on your own dime. Effectively, this means you are earning 17 cents per mile for your round-trip commute.
When Does the Pay Start?
Just like the $15 daily stipend, California does not pay mileage for the first day of jury service. You only begin accruing the 34-cent-per-mile reimbursement on your second day of service, assuming you are selected or asked to return.
The Public Transit Push
Because the mileage reimbursement is so low, and parking at CA courthouses can be a nightmare, almost every superior court in California strongly encourages public transit. Many courts (especially in LA, SF, and San Diego) offer free transit passes to jurors in lieu of the mileage reimbursement. If given the choice, the free transit pass is almost always the more economically sound option.
