Federal Grand Jury Pay Explained

Getting called for a federal grand jury is completely different from a local county summons. The cases are bigger, the security is tighter, and thankfully, the pay is noticeably better.

The Standard Federal Rate

As of 2026, the standard attendance fee for federal grand jurors is $50 per day. While this still isn't going to replace a full-time salary, it is significantly higher than the $10 or $15 that many state courts offer.

The Extended Service Bonus

Because federal grand juries can convene for 18 months (usually meeting a few days a month), there is a provision for extended service. If you serve more than 45 days on a federal grand jury, the judge presiding over the panel has the authority to increase your daily attendance fee to $60 per day.

Mileage and Travel Perks

Federal courts are far more generous with travel expenses. Not only will you receive the standard federal mileage rate (around 67 cents per mile), but you are also entitled to reimbursement for toll charges and parking fees. If you live far enough away that an overnight stay is required, the federal court will actually pay a 'subsistence allowance' to cover your hotel and meals.

Bottom Line

Federal grand jurors are paid $50 a day, jumping to $60 after 45 days of service. You will also receive comprehensive reimbursements for mileage, tolls, and parking.
