Federal jury duty is the gold standard when it comes to juror compensation. Unlike cash-strapped county courts, the federal government closely tracks IRS standards to ensure jurors aren't losing money on their commute.
The 2026 Federal Mileage Rate
For the calendar year 2026, the federal juror mileage reimbursement rate tracks the IRS standard mileage rate, which is approximately 67 cents per mile (subject to minor mid-year IRS adjustments).
This rate is paid round-trip. If you live 20 miles from the federal courthouse, you will be credited for 40 miles per day (roughly $26.80 daily just for travel).
Tolls and Parking
In addition to the generous mileage rate, federal jurors are fully reimbursed for:
- Highway tolls (must provide receipts or E-ZPass printouts)
- Bridge tolls
- Public parking garage fees (receipt required)
Overnight Stays and Subsistence
Because federal districts cover massive geographic areas, some jurors live hours away from the courthouse. If your commute is deemed unreasonably long, the court will authorize an overnight stay. In 2026, you will receive a daily subsistence allowance (covering hotel and meals) that matches the federal per diem rate for that specific city—which can be anywhere from $150 to $300+ a night.
