Don't Expect Cash at the Door

In the movies, jurors are sometimes handed an envelope of cash as they leave. In reality, county and federal court accounting departments move at a glacial pace. You will not receive your payment on your final day of service.

Average Wait Times

Payment timelines vary drastically depending on whether you served at a local municipal court or a federal district court:

  • County/State Courts: Expect a wait of 3 to 6 weeks. Checks are usually processed in monthly batches. If you finish your service on the 2nd of the month, your check might not be cut until the 30th.
  • Federal Courts: The federal system is slightly more efficient. Checks or direct deposits are usually processed within 10 to 14 business days after your service concludes.

Debit Cards vs. Paper Checks

While most courts still mail traditional paper checks to the address on your voter registration, a growing number of large counties (like LA and Cook County) are moving toward issuing prepaid debit cards. These are sometimes handed out on the last day, but the funds aren't activated for several days.
