Does Jury Duty Pay for Parking?

You finally found the courthouse, but the only parking lot nearby has a big sign that says '$25 Daily Max.' Does the court expect you to pay that out of your own pocket?

The State Court Reality

When it comes to local county and state courts, parking is the biggest hidden expense of jury duty. The vast majority of municipal courts do not reimburse you for private parking garages.

Instead, they usually offer one of two alternatives:

  1. They have a designated free 'Juror Lot' (which fills up by 7:30 AM).
  2. They provide a free public transit pass to encourage you not to drive.

If you choose to ignore the free lot or the transit pass and park in a private garage, you are entirely responsible for the bill.

Federal Courts are Different

Federal district courts are far more accommodating. If you are serving on a federal jury, the court will almost always reimburse reasonable parking fees and toll charges. You must bring your parking receipt to the jury clerk at the end of the day to get it added to your voucher.

Will My Employer Pay?

Unless you are an executive with an incredibly generous corporate expense account, no. Private employers are not legally required to cover your travel or parking expenses for civic duties.

Bottom Line

State courts rarely reimburse for private parking, offering free transit passes instead. Federal courts will reimburse parking, provided you submit the receipt to the clerk.
