Reporting to the Supreme Court building on Adams Street in Brooklyn? Kings County jury duty is a massive operation. Between the security lines and the waiting rooms, you'll have plenty of time to wonder when you're getting paid.
The Standard NY State Rate
In New York State, the juror fee is $40 per day. This applies to all jurors serving in Kings County. While $40 doesn't go very far in Brooklyn, it is significantly higher than many other states.
The NY Employer Pay Law
New York has one of the best laws in the country regarding employer-paid jury duty. If you work for an employer with more than 10 employees, they are legally required to pay you your regular wage (up to $40) for the first three days of jury service.
This means if your boss is paying you your regular salary for those first three days, the state will NOT pay you the $40 court fee. The court fee kicks in on day four, or on day one if your employer isn't paying you (or if you are unemployed/freelance).
Travel and Logistics
Do not drive to jury duty in downtown Brooklyn. Parking is incredibly expensive and not reimbursed by the court. Take the subway (the 2, 3, 4, 5, M, R, A, C, and F trains all have stops nearby). The court does not provide a separate travel stipend on top of the $40 fee, so you'll be using your MetroCard.
When Do I Get Paid?
If you are owed the $40 daily fee by the state, checks are mailed from Albany and usually arrive about 4 to 6 weeks after your service ends.
