You spent months planning and paying for a cruise, and suddenly a jury summons appears in the mail demanding you report on the exact day your ship departs.
Breathe easy: Almost every court in the country allows you to postpone your service at least once, no questions asked.
Courts understand that people have lives. If you have a pre-booked vacation, a business trip, or a surgery scheduled, you do not have to cancel it. The catch is that you cannot simply ignore the summons.
Log onto your county's online juror portal (the website will be listed on your summons). Look for the 'Postpone' or 'Reschedule' option. You will usually be presented with a calendar and asked to select a new week to serve, typically within the next 3 to 6 months.
While the first delay is usually automatic, requesting a second postponement is much harder. If you postponed your service once, and the new date conflicts with another trip, you will likely have to speak directly with the jury clerk and provide receipts (like airline tickets or hotel bookings) to prove you paid for the trip before the second summons was issued.
Never cancel a paid vacation for jury duty. Use the court's online portal to automatically postpone your service to a more convenient week.
