The Mileage Myth in Texas
Many Texans assume they will get a mileage check because the federal courts in Texas offer one. However, the Texas State Court system does not mandate a separate mileage reimbursement for jurors.
The Base Compensation
Texas law requires counties to pay a flat minimum rate, which is intended to absorb your travel costs. The minimums are:
- Day 1: $20 per day.
- Day 2 and Beyond: $58 per day.
Because the rate jumps to $58 on the second day, the state legislature feels this adequately covers travel and meal expenses for citizens seated on a trial.
County-Specific Exceptions
While the state does not mandate mileage, individual counties have the authority to offer better perks. For example, some rural counties where the commute is extremely long may offer a small travel stipend or gas voucher, but this is the exception, not the rule. Major metros like Harris or Dallas County rely strictly on the flat daily rate and free parking lots.
